Our Missions
1. Free Domestic Elephant
At our project, we work closely with local elephant owners to create a better future for both people and elephants.Instead of keeping elephants working in difficult conditions, we invite owners to join our program—where their elephants are released into a protected jungle environment.
Here, the elephants can roam freely, socialize, and live more naturally, just like wild elephants. At the same time, the owners still earn a stable income through responsible tourism. Visitors come to observe and learn about elephants in an ethical way—without riding or forcing them to perform. This creates a balance where elephants regain their freedom, and local communities continue to benefit.
Together, we are building a more respectful and sustainable relationship between humans and elephants.
2.Our Elephant Protection Work
At Free Elephant Laos, our mission is to protect both wild elephants and domestic elephants through community cooperation, conservation, and sustainable tourism.
Protecting Wild Elephants
We work closely with local villagers and park rangers to conduct weekly surveys in the nearby national park, monitoring wild elephant populations and their habitats.By maintaining a regular presence in the forest, we help deter hunters and wildlife traffickers, sending a strong message that elephants are protected and valued.
This community-based protection model not only keeps wild elephants safe but also builds local pride in conserving the country’s natural heritage.
Caring for Domestic Elephants
Many elephants in Laos belong to mahout families, who traditionally relied on their elephants for logging or tourism labor. Through our project, we invite mahouts to join us in a new, ethical way — one that allows their elephants to rest, recover, and live freely in a natural environment. While participating in Lao Elephant Village, mahouts and their families receive fair income through tourism, so they no longer need to make their elephants work. This partnership ensures a better life for both elephants and the people who care for them.
Together, we are creating a future where elephants can live safely, mahout families can thrive, and the forests of Laos can remain wild and free.
3.Forest Protection and Sustainable Agriculture
One of the core goals of Free Elephant Laos is to protect the surrounding forest and restore natural habitats for wildlife and wild elephants. In many local communities, families currently manage more farmland than they actually need, often 4 to 5 hectares per household. This has led to continuous clearing of forested areas in order to expand traditional crops with relatively low economic value. Our project works closely with villagers to reduce the pressure on the forest by promoting sustainable agriculture. We introduce high-value crops that generate better income on smaller plots of land. By helping families transition to these more efficient and profitable plants, they can maintain or even increase their income while using less farmland. As villagers rely on smaller, more productive agricultural areas, they are encouraged to return unused land to nature. This restored land becomes valuable habitat for wildlife, supports biodiversity, and creates safe corridors for wild elephants. Through cooperation, education, and long-term community engagement, we aim to protect the forest while supporting local livelihoods in a sustainable and respectful way.
4. Support Community
At Free Elephant Laos project, we believe that true conservation begins with people. Our project is designed to empower local villagers by creating fair, sustainable opportunities through eco-tourism.
